How to Play Rabbit

Rabbit is a golf game where winning a hole outright "captures the rabbit," anyone who wins a later hole steals it, and whoever holds it at the end of each nine wins that pot. Hold it when it matters. Here's how it works.

What's the deal?

The rabbit is a trophy that passes between players through the round. Win a hole outright and you capture the rabbit. Someone else wins a hole? They steal it. The player holding the rabbit at the end of the front nine wins that bet — same on the back.

When two players are tied heading to 18 with the rabbit in play, every shot in the group becomes a big deal. Small heroics, big payouts.

Setting the stakes: set a separate pot for the front nine and the back nine — $5–$10 each is typical — so there are two chances to cash even if you cool off late.

How to play Rabbit

  1. 1Set a pot for the front nine and the back nine separately.
  2. 2Play stroke play. Win a hole outright (lowest score, no ties) and you have the rabbit.
  3. 3Another player wins the next hole outright? The rabbit transfers to them.
  4. 4Ties on any hole = the rabbit stays with whoever currently has it.
  5. 5Holder of the rabbit walking off hole 9 wins the front pot. Same for hole 18.
🏌️ First Tee Tip Rabbit creates a hot-hand effect — when someone's on a roll holding the rabbit, the pressure on everyone else builds fast. Grab it on hole 7, then just par 8 and 9, and you walk away with the front-nine money regardless of your total.
