How to Play Scotch Foursomes

Scotch Foursomes (also called Greensomes) is a 2v2 alternate-shot format where both partners tee off, you pick the best drive, and then partners alternate shots into the hole. It's alternate shot without the misery. Here's how it works.

What's the deal?

Scotch Foursomes — also called Greensomes — is alternate shot, but far more enjoyable. In traditional alternate shot one player tees off and you're stuck with it. In Scotch, both players hit tee shots, pick the best one, and then alternate from there.

Nobody gets stuck playing from an unplayable tee shot, and every hole still comes down to one team ball. It works great as a 2v2 match.

Setting the stakes: play it as a match — a flat bet for the 18, or per-hole — and stack a Nassau on the team result for three bets in one.

How to play Scotch Foursomes

  1. 1Both partners tee off on every hole.
  2. 2Pick the best drive — that's where you play from. Pick up the other ball.
  3. 3The partner who did not hit the chosen drive plays the next shot.
  4. 4Alternate shots until the ball drops. Count total strokes as the team score.
  5. 5Compare team scores. Lower score wins the hole.
🏌️ First Tee Tip Strategy comes from choosing who tees off where. If one partner bombs it and the other is a precision iron player, you want the iron player hitting more approach shots — think through the holes before you start.
